Trump Accounts: What You Need to Know
President Trump recently announced the creation of “Trump Accounts,” a new tax-advantaged savings vehicle designed to help children participate in the financial markets from an early age. Given that a significant portion of Americans currently have no exposure to the stock market, these accounts are intended to broaden access to long-term wealth building — starting at birth.
Who Are These Accounts For?
Trump Accounts may be established for any child under the age of 18. However, the greatest benefit is available to children born between 2025 and 2028, as the federal government will make an initial $1,000 deposit into each qualifying account. Many employers have also announced plans to contribute on behalf of employees with children born during this window.
How Do They Work?
Parents, guardians, and even friends may contribute to a child’s account, subject to an annual contribution limit of $5,000. Funds are invested in low-cost index funds with a long-term growth objective.
At age 18, ownership of the account transfers to the child, who may use the funds for any purpose — including a home purchase, business startup, or educational expenses — without penalty. Distributions will be taxed as ordinary income to the child at that time. Contributions made by others (parents, guardians, friends) using after-tax dollars will be distributed back to the child free of additional taxation.
How to Get Started
Enrollment is straightforward. The IRS has established a dedicated resource at trumpaccounts.gov, which provides detailed information and a link to the required Form 4547. A companion mobile app is also available to help you monitor account progress and manage contributions over time.
A Few Considerations
While Trump Accounts represent an interesting savings opportunity, they may not be the right fit for every family. Most notably, funds cannot be accessed before the child reaches age 18, so this vehicle is best suited for long-term planning rather than shorter-term needs. The benefit is also most pronounced for children born between 2025 and 2028 who are eligible for the government seed contribution.
