Habitat for Humanity

Today our  OmniStar teammates had the privilege of working on a Habitat for Humanity project. We arrived early, dressed and ready to work.  Fortunately, we worked in their air-conditioned warehouse, building walls, door frames, and window frames. It was great to see the number of volunteers who give their time regularly for such a great cause.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide. It was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller in Americus, Georgia. The idea originated from their work at Koinonia Farm, a Christian community focused on living out the teachings of Jesus through service and community building.

The Fullers developed the concept of “partnership housing,” where those in need of adequate shelter would work alongside volunteers to build affordable homes. This model was unique because it required future homeowners to invest “sweat equity” by participating in the construction of their own homes and those of others.

In 1984, Habitat’s popularity soared when former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn participated in a Habitat work project. Their ongoing support has significantly boosted the organization’s profile and fundraising efforts. Today, Habitat for Humanity operates in nearly 70 countries, helping millions of people achieve homeownership.

A core element of Habitat’s mission is the belief that everyone should have a safe, and affordable place to live. This monumental effort would not be possible without volunteer labor and donations of money and materials. Habitat also runs ReStores, nonprofit home improvement stores, and donation centers selling new and gently used furniture, appliances, and building materials to the public at a fraction of the retail price. The proceeds from these stores help fund the building of homes and community projects.

Habitat for Humanity continues to be a leading force in addressing housing issues, advocating for affordable housing policies, and fostering community development. Its efforts have affected the lives of countless families, offering stability, security, and hope through homeownership. Though it was hard work for me with some body aches and blisters on my hands it feels good to know our efforts will help those in need achieve a safe place to call home. If you would like to donate to Habitat for Humanity, there are several ways to do so. You can donate used furniture to the Restore, they will even come pick it up for you. You can donate cash or stock to Habitat for Humanity or volunteer at your local Habitat for Humanity location.
